A supermarket worker in Adelaide’s western suburbs has narrowly avoided serious injury after a car reversed through the wall of a busy local grocery store on Sunday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the Woodville IGA on Port Road at around 1:30pm following reports that a vehicle had crashed into the building, causing significant damage and sending shelves and products flying across the store.
Store owner Marc Schirripa said he was checking stock inside the supermarket when the vehicle suddenly smashed through the wall behind him.
“It felt like a big wave shooting up behind me, hitting me from behind, pushing me up against the shelves,” Schirripa said.
“It was like a sonic boom just flashing behind me.”
“A car reversed through the wall quite fast, smashed into the wall and blew everything on top of me.”
CCTV footage captured the dramatic moment the vehicle burst through an aisle stocked with snacks and confectionery, causing extensive disruption inside the store.
Paramedics examined Schirripa at the scene, but fortunately he escaped without serious injuries.
Police said the driver, a 31-year-old woman, and a passenger in the vehicle were also uninjured.
Despite the frightening incident, Schirripa expressed relief that no one was seriously hurt.
“She was a little bit shook up, and I’m OK,” he said.
“I’m a very lucky man.”
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, while the store begins assessing the damage caused by the incident.
The accident serves as a reminder of the unexpected hazards businesses can face and the importance of vehicle safety in commercial areas.
