Bangladesh’s busiest transport corridor, the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway, is set to undergo a major modernization drive as authorities introduce technology-based traffic management systems and new infrastructure designed to improve road safety, reduce congestion, and enhance travel efficiency.
The highway, widely regarded as the backbone of the country’s economy and communications network, is witnessing the rollout of several initiatives, including round-the-clock surveillance through artificial intelligence-powered cameras, an automated fine system, and plans for significant road expansion.
A key component of the upgrade is the introduction of 24-hour AI surveillance, which was launched on August 18 along approximately 250 kilometers of the highway, stretching from Signboard in Jatrabari to Chattogram City Gate. The system is designed to automatically detect and record traffic violations, helping authorities improve compliance with road safety regulations.
Under the project, a total of 1,427 AI-powered cameras will be installed at 490 locations along the highway. The advanced monitoring system can identify a range of traffic offenses, including speeding, lane discipline violations, dangerous overtaking, driving on the wrong side of the road, and illegal parking.
Authorities say the automated enforcement mechanism will allow traffic violations to be detected more efficiently through an “auto fine” system, reducing reliance on manual enforcement and helping improve overall road discipline.
In addition to smart traffic monitoring, the government is planning to construct new overpasses and underpasses to ease traffic flow and improve pedestrian safety. Long-term plans also envision upgrading the highway to 10 lanes, a move aimed at accommodating growing traffic volumes and supporting Bangladesh’s expanding economy.
State Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Habibur Rashid Habib said the government is pursuing a comprehensive strategy that combines road expansion, modern technology, improved traffic discipline, and supporting infrastructure to create a safer and more efficient highway network.
The modernization effort is expected to play a crucial role in reducing accidents, shortening travel times, and strengthening connectivity between Dhaka and Chattogram, the country’s principal port city. As transportation demand continues to rise, the technology-driven transformation of the highway is being viewed as a major step toward modernizing Bangladesh’s road infrastructure.
