China Offers Expanded Railway Cooperation as Xi and Vietnam’s New President Deepen Strategic Ties

1 min read

China has offered to significantly strengthen its cooperation with Vietnam on railway development including loans, technology transfers, training programs and industrial support according to a joint statement released by Beijing’s foreign ministry on Friday. The announcement follows a meeting between President Xi Jinping and Vietnam’s newly elected president To Lam on Wednesday.

Beijing said it would encourage Chinese enterprises to take part in Vietnam’s railway construction projects, describing the initiative as a “new bright spot” in the two countries’ strategic partnership. Both leaders called for deeper transport and logistics links, aligning with Vietnam’s role in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which has funded major infrastructure projects across Asia and Europe.

Xi urged both sides to maintain “high strategic clarity” and prioritise political security as they expand cooperation. The visit marks To Lam’s first overseas trip since assuming the presidency last week, underscoring the importance Hanoi places on its relationship with Beijing.
