At least six people have been killed and more than a dozen others injured after a gunman opened fire in the centre of Krakow, Poland’s second-largest city, in an attack authorities are investigating as a possible act of extremist violence.
The shooting began shortly before 3:00pm local time in Krakow’s historic Main Market Square, one of the city’s busiest tourist destinations.
According to police, the suspect drove into the square before opening fire indiscriminately at members of the public from inside a vehicle.
Witness footage from the scene captured widespread panic as people fled for safety while gunshots echoed across the square. Authorities said a passing tram was also struck during the attack, shattering several windows, although no passengers on board were injured.
Armed police officers responded within minutes and engaged the suspect in a gun battle. Officials said the attacker was shot within approximately three minutes of the assault beginning, preventing what could have been an even greater loss of life.
A 25-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting and remains in hospital after undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound sustained during the confrontation.
Investigators later searched the suspect’s residence, where they discovered three bodies, bringing the overall death toll to at least six. Authorities have not yet publicly identified the victims or disclosed the circumstances surrounding the deaths found at the property.
Footage verified by media organisations reportedly shows a police officer confronting the suspect on the ground before firing multiple shots. The officer was also apparently injured during the incident, though details regarding the extent of those injuries have not been released.
Police are continuing to investigate the attack, including reports that the suspected gunman may have had links to far-right extremist circles. Authorities have not yet announced any formal motive.
The shooting has shocked Poland and prompted heightened security measures as investigators work to piece together the sequence of events and determine whether others may have been involved.
