A Melbourne man accused of murdering his wife more than three decades ago has pleaded not guilty and has been committed to stand trial in the Supreme Court.
Craig Freeman, 63, was charged last year over the death of Melinda Freeman, who was found dead in their Whittlesea home in October 1991. At the time, Mr Freeman told police he returned home with his son around 11.30pm to find the house ransacked, the front door open and his wife lying dead on the top landing.
Mr Freeman appeared briefly in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday for a committal mention, accompanied by his current wife, who has provided a $500,000 surety for his bail. His lawyer confirmed he had elected to proceed directly to the Supreme Court.
He formally entered a not‑guilty plea to one count of murder and will face a directions hearing on March 26.
While on bail, Mr Freeman must remain in Victoria, report to police and notify authorities of any change of address.
