Yunus Urges Armed Forces to Safeguard “Historic” February 12 Vote

2 min read

Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has called on Bangladesh’s armed forces to play a decisive and impartial role in ensuring that the upcoming February 12 referendum and 13th parliamentary election are conducted freely, fairly and in a spirit befitting a democratic celebration.

Addressing senior military officials during a high‑level meeting at Army Headquarters on Monday, Yunus described the twin polls as a “critical juncture” for the nation’s democratic future. He stressed that the professionalism and neutrality of the armed forces would be essential in building public confidence during this sensitive period.

According to a statement from the chief adviser’s press wing, Yunus expressed confidence that the military long regarded as a symbol of public trust would once again carry out its responsibilities with integrity. He paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War and the student‑led uprising of July-August 2024, acknowledging the armed forces’ enduring role in maintaining peace and stability.

Yunus also noted that the military’s contribution to restoring law and order after what he described as an “era of fascism” would remain a defining chapter in Bangladesh’s history.

Calling the referendum and election “extremely significant” for the country’s democratic advancement, he said the vote would give citizens the chance to express the aspirations they voiced during the July 24 uprising, after decades of being denied meaningful voting rights.
