Spirit of Tasmania Website Overwhelmed as New Ferry Tickets Go on Sale

2 min read

The Spirit of Tasmania website experienced major disruptions on Tuesday morning as thousands of travellers rushed to secure tickets for the highly anticipated new ferries, Spirit IV and Spirit V.

Tickets were scheduled to become available at 10:00 am, but heavy demand quickly overwhelmed the booking system. Visitors to the website were met with notices advising that high traffic had resulted in delays and that users had been placed in an online queue while attempting to make reservations.

The ticket release marked a significant milestone for Tasmania’s ferry service. Prior to this launch, bookings had been limited to the capacity of the existing Spirit vessels, with reservations available only up to June 6, 2027. The latest release opened access to additional sailings and increased passenger capacity on dates that had previously sold out.

Demand was further boosted by the introduction of several new features aboard the upcoming ferries. Travelers were offered access to the first pet-friendly cabins, expanded accommodation options, and a range of promotional fares. The new vessels will also significantly increase transport capacity for caravans and recreational vehicles, a feature expected to be particularly popular among tourists.

The rollout of the new ships has attracted considerable public attention following a series of delays and rising project costs. Despite those challenges, the launch of ticket sales generated strong interest from passengers eager to experience the upgraded vessels.

According to TT-Line, the operator of Spirit of Tasmania, the new ferries will feature 301 cabins, accommodate hundreds more passengers than the current vessels, and offer substantially increased vehicle and caravan capacity.

TT-Line Chief Executive Chris Carbone recently described the arrival of the new ships as the beginning of a new chapter for Tasmania’s ferry service. Government representatives also welcomed the strong public response, noting that the high level of demand reflects enthusiasm for the expanded services and improved passenger experience.

While technical issues frustrated some customers attempting to book tickets, authorities and operators said teams were working to manage the demand and restore normal website performance as quickly as possible.

The overwhelming interest highlights the popularity of Tasmania’s ferry connection with mainland Australia and the expectations surrounding the arrival of the next generation of Spirit of Tasmania vessels.
