A massive blaze broke out at the Wang Fuk Court residential complex in Hong Kong’s northern Tai Po district, killing at least four people and injuring several others, according to reports from AFP.

The complex, consisting of eight blocks with nearly 2,000 flats, caught fire when bamboo scaffolding used in construction ignited, spreading quickly to other parts of the buildings.

Government officials confirmed four fatalities by 5 p.m. local time. Two of the injured are in critical condition, while one remains stable. A man and a woman suffering severe burns were rescued unconscious and rushed to hospital. Local media reported that some residents were initially trapped inside.

Live television footage showed thick smoke billowing from bamboo scaffolding across multiple towers. Authorities issued the second-highest fire alert, and firefighters closed parts of a nearby highway to carry out emergency operations.
