Tarique Rahman Hails Shahidul Alam’s Gaza Flotilla Role

Veteran photographer and human rights activist Shahidul Alam was aboard the final and largest vessel in the 44-ship Global Sumud Flotilla, which aimed to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza. By Friday afternoon, Israeli forces had intercepted all vessels and detained approximately 450 passengers, including activists, journalists, and lawmakers from around the world.

On Saturday, hours after Shahidul’s vessel was seized, BNP leader Tarique Rahman posted a message on Facebook expressing solidarity. “Shahidul Alam’s bold step onto the Gaza flotilla is not just an act of solidarity, it is a roar of conscience,” he wrote. “By carrying Bangladesh’s flag, he reminds the world of what the people of Bangladesh stand for never bowing down to oppression and injustice. BNP stands with him and the people of Palestine, today and always.”

In a video message released Friday noon, Shahidul confirmed he was aboard the last vessel, which had not yet been intercepted at the time. He noted that while most ships carried food and medical supplies, his vessel was focused on symbolically breaking Israel’s 18-year blockade of Gaza. The ship carried 96 passengers, primarily journalists and health workers.

Shortly after Shahidul’s message, Israeli authorities confirmed they had intercepted the final vessel.
