In a decisive move, Bangladesh’s interim government has launched efforts to repatriate 79 fishermen and sailors detained by the Indian Coast Guard. The foreign ministry has requested “consular access” to support the detained nationals and ensure embassy involvement.
On Monday, two fishing trawlers with the fishermen were seized near Khulna’s Hiron Point by the Indian Coast Guard. The vessels, FV Laila-2 and FV Meghna-5, owned by SR Fishing and C&A Agro Limited respectively, were reportedly fishing near the International Maritime Boundary Line when detained.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has communicated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attaching a report from the Bangladesh Coast Guard. The letter urges swift action to secure the safe return of the trawlers and crew.
Upon reaching out to their Indian counterparts, the Bangladesh Coast Guard confirmed the detention. The Indian authorities stated that they would consult higher officials for further steps. Meanwhile, the trawlers have been taken to Odisha’s Paradip Port.
This unfolding situation demands prompt and effective action, as the Bangladeshi government remains committed to bringing its citizens back safely.
