A Ukrainian aircraft transporting explosives bound for Libya was briefly detained in Trinidad and Tobago after landing to refuel, prompting a security review before authorities cleared it to continue its journey.
The plane, which arrived from the Bahamas on Thursday, touched down at Piarco International Airport in Port of Spain en route to Libya via Cape Verde. Its cargo immediately raised suspicions among immigration officers, who discovered that the explosives on board had not been properly declared, in violation of international aviation and security protocols.
According to the Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (AATT), officers determined that neither the pilot nor the crew bore responsibility for the undeclared materials. After a detailed assessment, the aircraft and its crew were authorised to depart.
The incident unfolded in a country better known for its beaches and world‑famous carnival, yet also recognised as a regional hub for drug trafficking due to its proximity just ten kilometres to the Venezuelan coast. Trinidad and Tobago has declared a state of emergency four times since 2021 in response to rising crime, underscoring the heightened sensitivity around aviation and border security.
While the aircraft was ultimately cleared, the episode highlights the complex security environment in the Caribbean and the global scrutiny surrounding flights carrying sensitive cargo.
