Japanese authorities have issued the country’s highest emergency alert as Typhoon Dujuan brings dangerous weather conditions, including torrential rain, flooding, landslides, and powerful winds to parts of central and eastern Japan.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a Level 5 emergency warning for flooding and landslides in Oshima Town and parts of the Izu Islands, south of Tokyo. A Level 5 warning is the most severe alert in Japan’s emergency system and is reserved for situations where lives are in immediate danger.
Meanwhile, Level 4 evacuation orders have been issued for areas in the northern Izu Islands, as well as parts of Chiba, Kanagawa, and Shizuoka prefectures, with residents urged to evacuate to safety before conditions deteriorate further.
Typhoon Dujuan, the 25th typhoon of the season, has already passed through the Izu archipelago and is expected to continue moving northeast, tracking parallel to the eastern coast of Honshu over the next 24 hours.
Forecasters have warned that heavy rainfall will continue throughout Monday, particularly across the Kanto region, where accumulations of up to 250 millimetres are expected. Authorities say the intense rainfall has already triggered landslides in several locations.
The storm has also disrupted daily life, with around 4,000 households in the Kanto region reported to be without power. Rising river levels and localized flooding have heightened concerns among residents, particularly in low-lying and landslide-prone areas.
Residents have been advised to monitor official weather updates closely and follow evacuation instructions where issued. Emergency services remain on high alert as the storm continues its path along Japan’s eastern coastline.
With strong winds, heavy rain, and flooding risks expected to persist, authorities are urging people to avoid unnecessary travel and take precautions to protect themselves and their families.
