At least six people have been killed and more than a dozen others injured after a gunman opened fire in the heart of Krakow, Poland’s second-largest city, in an attack authorities are investigating as a suspected act of terrorism.

The shooting began shortly before 3:00pm local time in Krakow’s Main Market Square, a busy tourist destination and one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

According to police, the suspect drove into the square before opening fire indiscriminately at members of the public from inside his vehicle. Witness footage recorded scenes of panic as visitors and residents fled for safety while gunshots rang out across the area.

During the attack, a passing tram was also struck by gunfire, shattering windows. Authorities said no passengers on the tram were injured.

Armed police officers responded rapidly to the scene and engaged the suspect in a gun battle. Officials said the attacker was shot within three minutes of the assault beginning, preventing what could have been a significantly deadlier incident.

A 25-year-old man arrested in connection with the shooting remains in hospital after undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound sustained during the confrontation with police.

In a further development, police later searched the suspect’s residence and discovered three bodies, bringing the total confirmed death toll to at least six. Investigators have not yet released details regarding the identities of the victims or the circumstances surrounding the deaths found at the property.

The Krakow branch of Poland’s National Public Prosecutor’s Office has announced a formal investigation into what it describes as a suspected terrorist offence.

Authorities are also examining reports that the suspect may have had links to far-right extremist circles, although no official motive has yet been confirmed.

Video authenticated by investigators reportedly shows a police officer confronting the suspect on the ground before firing several shots. The footage also appears to show the officer being injured during the confrontation.

The attack has shocked Poland and prompted an extensive security operation as authorities continue their investigation into the suspect’s background, possible motives, and whether any other individuals may have been involved.
