Parliament’s Fourth Session Set to Begin as Preparations Finalised

Bangladesh’s fourth parliamentary session is set to begin later this month to meet constitutional requirements, with the President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir formally summoning the session under Article 72(1) of the Constitution. The Parliament Secretariat has already completed the necessary preparations for the sitting.

The session is expected to continue for around 10 days until 20 November, although it will be shorter than usual due to the constitutional requirement to convene a new parliamentary session in January 2027.

Speaking on the matter, Nurul Islam Moni, Chief Whip of Parliament, said the session would be brief and focused primarily on legislative business.

“The session will be short. Around five to six bills might be placed during the session, and discussions will be held on these bills.”

As is customary, the first parliamentary session of the year is usually held in January, and sources indicate that the first session of 2027 may begin in mid-January.

A meeting of the Parliamentary Advisory Committee will be held on the opening day of the session to finalise its schedule, duration, and agenda.

According to parliamentary sources, the session will include:

  • Question-and-answer sessions involving ministers
  • Discussions on public interest notices
  • General debates on national issues
  • Opportunities for opposition members to raise current public-interest matters within an agreed timeframe

However, the much-discussed proposal for constitutional amendments will not be presented during this session.

Sources said a Special Committee on Constitutional Amendment is still finalising its recommendations, and the proposal is expected to be placed before Parliament during the fifth session scheduled for January 2027.

Parliamentary officials say the upcoming session will focus on routine legislative business while paving the way for more significant constitutional discussions in the next session.
