Taylor Vows to Change Sex Discrimination Act After Court Rules Trans Woman Was Unlawfully Excluded From App

Opposition Leader Angus Taylor says a Coalition government under his leadership would amend the Sex Discrimination Act, after the Federal Court upheld a landmark ruling that a transgender woman was unlawfully discriminated against when she was blocked from accessing a women‑only social app.

Roxanne Tickle was awarded $20,000 in damages in her case against the Giggle for Girls app and its CEO, Sall Grover. A judge had previously ruled that restricting her access in 2021 amounted to discrimination based on gender identity a decision the Federal Court has now upheld.

In a statement posted to social media, Mr Taylor said the ruling “confirmed that Australian law does not properly protect single‑sex spaces for women and girls.” He pledged that a future Coalition government would legislate to ensure protections “based on biological sex.”

He outlined his proposal:

Define biological sex in the Act “male or female, the sex you are born.”

Protect single‑sex spaces across public life.

Retain all existing protections for transgender Australians.

Mr Taylor described the plan as “common sense,” rejecting claims that it targets transgender people. “Every protection they currently have remains. We are not removing a single protection from anyone,” he said.

He ended his statement with a pointed challenge to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese:
“Does he believe women and girls deserve protections based on biological sex?”

The ruling and the political response is expected to intensify national debate over how Australian law balances gender identity protections with single‑sex provisions.
