South Korea and Iran held talks regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz during a phone call between their foreign ministers on Friday.
According to South Korea’s foreign ministry, Foreign Minister Cho Hyun spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi at Tehran’s request. The discussion focused on recent developments in the Middle East and the security situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
The conversation took place days after South Korea confirmed it was evaluating possible ways to contribute to maritime security in the strategically important waterway. Seoul has stated that no final decision has been made regarding any potential military deployment and has dispatched a fact-finding team to assess conditions in the area.
Iran previously warned that any South Korean military involvement related to the conflict could have significant consequences, adding to regional tensions surrounding the vital shipping route.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important energy transit corridors, carrying a substantial share of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports. Disruptions to shipping traffic in the area have affected energy markets and raised concerns among governments and businesses worldwide.
