There are growing concerns over the fitness of Socceroos forward Mo Toure just days before Australia’s opening World Cup match against Türkiye, after the striker was absent from Wednesday evening’s training session.
Media were permitted to watch only the first 15 minutes of training, during which Toure was nowhere to be seen, while the rest of the squad completed their warm‑up drills. Football Australia has not yet commented on his condition. Defenders Jordan Bos and Milos Degenek are expected to speak later on Wednesday (Thursday AEST), which may shed more light on the situation.
Australia’s Options if Toure Is Unavailable
If Toure is ruled out for Saturday’s clash, coach Tony Popovic still has several pathways to fill the central striking role:
Tete Yengi: The only other traditional No. 9 in the squad, though with just two caps, Popovic may hesitate to rely on him with points at stake.
Nestory Irankunda: Explosive and versatile, capable of playing as a lone forward despite being more commonly used wide.
Nishan Velupillay: Has experience leading the line for Melbourne Victory and offers strong pressing and movement.
Mathew Leckie: The wildcard. Primarily a winger, but his work rate and physicality make him a viable pressing forward if needed.
Popovic’s selection will depend on Toure’s medical assessment and the tactical approach planned for Türkiye, a side known for its physicality and disciplined defensive structure.
What This Means for Australia
Toure’s absence would be a significant blow to Australia’s attacking plans, given his pace, strength and ability to stretch defences. With the World Cup opener fast approaching, the Socceroos will be hoping his omission from training was precautionary rather than a sign of a more serious issue.
