One Nation has indicated it will support a proposal to permanently ban fracking for gas in South Australia’s South East, aligning with the Greens on the issue.
One Nation MP Jason Virgo said he had secured support from his party’s South Australian MPs for a bill seeking to permanently prohibit fracking on the Limestone Coast. While he stated that One Nation supports mining and gas development in appropriate locations, he argued that the Limestone Coast is not a suitable area for fracking.
The issue has attracted significant community attention in the region. Opponents of fracking have raised concerns about potential impacts on the local aquifer, which is an important water source for agriculture and other industries in the South East.
Fracking, a method used to extract gas and oil by injecting water, sand, and chemicals underground, has been subject to a 10-year moratorium in the region since 2018.
Earlier this year, the South Australian government introduced legislation aimed at ending the moratorium before its scheduled expiry, citing concerns about future gas supply. However, the proposal faces opposition in the state’s upper house, with One Nation, the Greens, and the Liberal Party indicating they would not support the measure.
