Scarlett Johansson is set to headline Scapegoat, the next film from acclaimed filmmaker Ari Aster, marking one of the most high‑profile collaborations of the year. The project reunites Aster with distributor A24, which has backed all four of his previous films and helped cement his reputation as a favourite among cinephiles.
As usual for an Aster project, plot details remain tightly guarded. The film is written by Aster himself and will be produced by Aster and Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner. Industry insiders say the script immediately drew attention across Hollywood a pattern that has followed Aster since the breakout success of Hereditary.
Johansson’s casting is notable given her packed 2026 schedule, which includes the next Exorcist instalment at Universal and the upcoming Batman sequel opposite Robert Pattinson. But sources say that once she read Aster’s script, she committed to the role, with producers adjusting the shooting timeline to fit her calendar.
The actress is coming off a major 2025, having helped relaunch the Jurassic World franchise with Jurassic World: Rebirth, which grossed $868 million worldwide and already has a sequel in development. She also made her directorial debut with Eleanor the Great, which premiered at Cannes to strong critical attention.
With Johansson on board and Aster returning to his signature brand of unsettling originality, Scapegoat is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated films of the year.
