SA Police Road‑Safety Chief Fined After Taking Selfie While Cycling

2 min read

A South Australia Police superintendent responsible for enforcing road safety laws has been fined after he was caught using a mobile phone while riding a bike.

Superintendent Shane Johnson, head of SAPOL’s Traffic Services Branch, received an expiation notice after taking a selfie while cycling down a back street and uploading it to the fitness‑tracking app Strava. The photo, published by the Adelaide Advertiser, shows him smiling at the camera while holding his phone mid‑ride.

Under South Australian law, cyclists must follow the same road rules as motorists including the ban on using a mobile phone while in control of a vehicle or bicycle.

Johnson acknowledged the breach, calling it a “lapse in judgement.”
“I take full responsibility for my actions. I acknowledge I have done the wrong thing and accept the consequences,” he said. “No‑one is immune from road traffic laws. Every road user needs to remain alert and aware of the rules when using mobile phones.”

The matter has been referred to SAPOL’s Ethical and Professional Standards Branch, and an internal conduct investigation is underway.

The incident has sparked discussion about accountability among senior police officials, particularly those tasked with promoting road safety.
