Russian Airstrikes Plunge Kyiv Region Into Darkness as Cross‑Border Attacks Intensify

1 min read

Russian airstrikes have knocked out power to thousands of homes across the Kyiv region, plunging neighbourhoods into darkness overnight as emergency crews raced to repair damaged energy infrastructure. The strikes are part of a relentless campaign that has seen near‑nightly attacks on the capital in recent weeks, with some nights resulting in dozens of deaths and severe injuries.

The escalation comes as Russia faces growing pressure from Ukrainian missile and drone attacks, which have struck targets deep inside Russian territory. This week alone, two separate attacks inside Russia killed at least 16 people, including a child a stark reminder of how the conflict has widened beyond Ukraine’s borders.

Russia launched its full‑scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and now controls roughly one‑fifth of Ukrainian territory, largely concentrated in the eastern border regions. More than four and a half years into the war, both sides are absorbing heavy losses while international calls for renewed peace talks continue to mount.
