Pakistan’s preparations for the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup have taken an unusual turn, with the national team training without its head coach due to an administrative visa issue.
Head coach Nolberto Solano, the former Peru international and ex-Premier League star, has been unable to join the squad’s training camp in Islamabad after problems emerged with his visa application. According to Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) officials, Solano submitted the application under an incorrect visa category, causing delays in the approval process.
Once the mistake was identified, the federation resubmitted the application using the correct category. However, the delay meant Solano was unable to travel to Pakistan in time for the team’s preparations ahead of the tournament.
As a result, the former Newcastle United midfielder is now expected to fly directly to Indonesia, where he will join the squad before the start of the competition.
In Solano’s absence, assistant coaches Titus Bramble and Walid Javaid have taken charge of training sessions in Islamabad. Bramble, a familiar figure to football fans, enjoyed a lengthy Premier League career, representing clubs including Ipswich Town, Newcastle United, Wigan Athletic, and Sunderland.
Pakistan has announced a 23-man squad for the tournament, led by captain Abdullah Iqbal. The team has also welcomed back experienced forward Kaleemullah, whose return adds valuable experience to the squad.
Despite the coaching setback, preparations have continued as Pakistan looks ahead to its participation in the first edition of the FIFA ASEAN Cup. Officials remain hopeful that Solano will reunite with the team before their opening fixtures and help guide the side through the competition.
The tournament represents an important opportunity for Pakistan to gain international experience and measure its progress against regional opponents as it continues efforts to strengthen its football program on the international stage.
