A mother and her 10‑year‑old son were injured in a shocking daylight attack outside the Victoria Police headquarters in Melbourne’s CBD, after a man allegedly punched the child and then stabbed the woman with a pair of scissors.
Police say the woman was walking with her three children along Spencer Street around 1pm when a man suddenly struck her son in the upper body. Superintendent Zorka Dunstan said the attacker initially walked away but then turned back, grabbed the mother and put her in a headlock before stabbing her repeatedly.
The woman suffered injuries to her back and shoulders, while her son was also hurt in the initial assault. Both were taken to hospital with non‑life‑threatening injuries.
Superintendent Dunstan praised the bravery of three passers‑by who intervened. One man jumped on the attacker and pulled him off the woman, while two others helped restrain him until police arrived. “It’s heroic,” she said. “Without their intervention it could have been a lot worse. We are so grateful for their assistance.”
Police arrested a 27‑year‑old Sunshine West man, who is yet to be interviewed. Investigators believe the family and the attacker were strangers, and the motive remains unknown.
The family, visiting Melbourne from Phillip Island, has been left traumatised. Dunstan said the two other children witnessed the attack and were deeply affected. She revealed she saw the incident unfold from her office window and comforted the family afterward. “One of the boys, who was 11, was crying… I gave him a hug because I was impacted just watching how he reacted.”
Police are continuing their investigation into the violent incident.
