Metcalfe Hits Back at US Media After Australia Branded “Average” Ahead of World Cup

2 min read

Socceroos midfielder Connor Metcalfe has fired back at US commentators who continue to dismiss Australia’s chances ahead of the FIFA World Cup, saying he is “sick of” the disrespect being shown toward the national team.

The latest criticism came from former US international Alexi Lalas, who described Australia as “an average team by any measure.” Speaking in San Diego as the Socceroos prepare for a warm‑up match against Switzerland, Metcalfe did not hold back.

“I’ve seen all the US stuff and I’m just sick of it, to be honest,” he said. “Let’s just wait for the game. Whatever happens, happens. It’s just so much rubbish. I’m sick of it.”

Lalas’s comments follow earlier remarks from former US striker Landon Donovan, who labelled coach Tony Popovic “smug” and predicted Australia would finish last in their group.

Australia faces Switzerland in a midday kick‑off, mirroring the time slot of their crucial group‑stage match against the United States later in the tournament. The fixture will be used to fine‑tune the squad’s conditioning and tactical rhythm.

Popovic confirmed that Cristian Volpato will make his first appearance for the Socceroos after his high‑profile switch from Italy just days before the squad announcement. The Sassuolo winger did not feature in Australia’s 1–0 loss to Mexico last week and has been building match fitness.

With tensions rising and outside noise growing louder, Metcalfe’s message was clear: Australia will do their talking on the pitch.
