McDonald’s Sparks Backlash as McSmart Deal Splits Into New Price Tiers

2 min read

McDonald’s customers across Australia are voicing frustration after the fast‑food giant confirmed major changes to its popular McSmart deal, with some fans saying they may switch to other chains altogether. The budget‑friendly offer, introduced in 2024, had been a favourite for those seeking a cheap meal and Macca’s had promised to keep its price steady until June 30.

From July 1, however, the McSmart will be divided into three separate tiers, with the cheapest option available only through the MyMacca’s app. The lowest tier, the $6.95 Saver, includes a hamburger, small fries, a small soft drink and a three‑piece nugget meal. But customers must order it digitally, a move that has already stirred debate online.

The next tier, the $7.95 McSmart Meal, offers a cheeseburger or chicken ’n’ cheese with small fries, a small drink and a choice of three‑piece McNuggets, hash browns, a hot apple pie or cookies. Many loyal diners say the restructuring feels like a quiet price rise, even if the company insists it’s about offering flexibility.

McDonald’s Australia CEO Joe Chiczewski defended the changes, saying the chain wants customers to rely on Macca’s for value. “We know a trip to Macca’s is more than just a meal. Whether it’s a quick lunch, an easy dinner or a well‑deserved treat, we want every customer to be able to count on us for a great meal at a price that works,” he said.

Still, the shift has left many fans disappointed, with some arguing the deal has lost the simplicity and affordability that made it so popular. As the new tiered system rolls out, customers will be watching closely to see whether the value stacks up or whether it pushes them toward alternatives.
