Kit Harington Reveals He Entered Rehab as Game of Thrones Final Season Premiered

Kit Harington, the actor who became a global sensation as Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, has revealed that he quietly entered rehab just as the show’s eighth and final season began airing in 2019. His performance across eight seasons turned him into one of television’s most recognisable faces, but behind the scenes, he was grappling with a deeply personal struggle.

In a candid conversation with former co‑star Peter Dinklage for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Harington said he checked himself into treatment the moment the final season premiered. He described the experience as surreal, explaining that he spent six weeks in isolation without his phone, determined to make a major change in his life. He admitted he needed to get sober and “get his head on straight” after years of pressure and emotional strain.

Harington said one of the biggest internal battles was stepping away from the massive global press tour surrounding the show’s finale. He felt the weight of expectation to remain front and centre during such a defining cultural moment, but ultimately chose to prioritise his wellbeing. “I’m checking out. I can’t do this,” he recalled telling himself a decision he now recognises as essential.

After completing treatment, the Eternals star took about a year away from acting, using the time to recover, reflect and rebuild after nearly a decade of living inside the world of Jon Snow. The break, he said, allowed him to reassess both his life and his career, emerging with a renewed sense of clarity.
