Music icons Madonna and Taylor Swift were among the biggest winners at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), with Madonna delivering a memorable opening performance and Swift breaking another career record.
The ceremony began with a high-profile collaboration as Sabrina Carpenter joined Madonna on stage to perform “Bring Your Love,” their duet from Madonna’s 2026 album Confessions II. The performance was followed by Charli XCX, who appeared to perform “Danceteria Afterhours.”
While the opening act lacked the controversy of Madonna’s famous 2003 VMA moment, it showcased the pop legend’s enduring stage presence and ability to command one of music’s biggest nights.
Madonna went on to enjoy a successful evening, taking home Artist of the Year and Best Dance, while “Bring Your Love” also earned Best Collaboration, giving her a total of three awards on the night.
Despite Madonna’s strong showing, Taylor Swift secured one of the evening’s most prestigious honors by winning Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia.”
Swift also entered the ceremony as a record-breaker. Prior to the VMAs, she was tied with Beyoncé on 30 career VMA wins. She moved ahead after receiving the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors award, recognizing her achievements behind the camera as a music video director.
The accolade further cemented Swift’s reputation as one of the industry’s most influential creative talents. As a director, she has now earned four VMAs, more than any other artist in the award category’s history.
During the ceremony, Swift also premiered the music video for her latest song “Patient Zero,” featuring actors Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.
Although she entered the night with 11 nominations, Swift ultimately left with two awards, including the coveted Video of the Year prize.
The 2026 VMAs highlighted both established superstars and contemporary chart-toppers, with Madonna proving her continued influence on pop culture while Swift added another milestone to her record-breaking career.
