Government Flags Widespread Improper Billing as NDIS Cracks Down on Non‑Compliant Providers

NDIS Minister Jenny McAllister says the government is intensifying efforts to ensure every dollar spent through the National Disability Insurance Scheme goes toward quality supports that genuinely improve participants’ lives, following new evidence of widespread improper billing.

In 2024, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) explicitly banned claims for general fitness, recreational activities and animal therapy, tightening rules around what constitutes legitimate support. But fresh analysis has revealed that 40% of a sample of 10,000 providers billing under the “other professional” category were paid for services not permitted under NDIS guidelines.

McAllister said the NDIA has already raised debts against some providers and referred others to the ACCC for further action, signalling a tougher stance on compliance.

A government briefing document noted that three measures are already in place to address incorrect billing, forming part of a broader push to strengthen scheme integrity and protect participant funding.
