Bangladesh’s new political landscape continues to shift after the BNP and its allies won a two‑thirds majority in the February 12 general election, returning the party to power after years in opposition and elevating Tarique Rahman to the office of prime minister. The resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin last month, citing health reasons before completing his five‑year term, triggered the presidential election now set to bring veteran BNP leader Alamgir into the nation’s highest constitutional office. Shahabuddin, a former Awami League politician and close confidant of Sheikh Hasina, was elected president in 2023 when the Awami League still dominated parliament.

Hasina has been living in India since fleeing Bangladesh following the mass uprising that toppled her government in August 2024. She has said she intends to return in December this year, though her political future remains uncertain.

Alamgir, one of the BNP’s longest‑serving leaders, served as the party’s secretary‑general from 2016 until his nomination for the presidency. During Hasina’s rule, he emerged as one of the opposition’s most prominent voices, facing repeated arrests and numerous legal cases. His political career began after studying economics at the University of Dhaka, followed by a stint as a teacher before joining the BNP in the early 1990s. He steadily rose through the party ranks and held several ministerial posts, most recently serving as local government minister before stepping down for the presidential nomination.

He is expected to be sworn in on Friday evening, marking a new chapter for the BNP‑led government as it consolidates power after a dramatic political transition.
