Argentina Cruise Past Honduras 2-0 as Messi Sits Out Pre‑World Cup Friendly

2 min read

Argentina’s World Cup preparations received a welcome boost with a comfortable 2-0 win over Honduras, even as captain Lionel Messi remained on the bench for the entire match. Coach Lionel Scaloni confirmed before the game that Messi is gradually regaining full fitness after a recent muscle issue. Despite making 10 changes to his lineup, the World Cup winning coach chose not to risk his star forward a decision that left some fans disappointed but did little to slow Argentina’s momentum.

The match, played at Kyle Field Stadium in College Station, Texas, unfolded in front of a crowd heavily dominated by Argentina supporters. Their enthusiasm never wavered, even though Messi spent all 90 minutes on the bench due to muscle fatigue.

Argentina took the lead in the 37th minute when Lautaro Martínez calmly converted a penalty after Nicolás Tagliafico was fouled inside the box. The Albiceleste doubled their advantage early in the second half through Atlético Madrid’s young forward Giuliano Simeone, who finished superbly from a clever back‑heel assist by Lautaro.

Only one player, Agustín Giay, completed the full match, as Scaloni continued to rotate heavily ahead of the tournament.

While the victory strengthened Argentina’s confidence, Messi’s absence remained a talking point among fans eager to see him back in action. Still, the team’s performance suggested their preparations are moving in a positive direction as the World Cup approaches.
