Alexia Putellas Claims Third Women’s Ballon d’Or
Earlier in the ceremony, Spanish football star Alexia Putellas won the Women’s Ballon d’Or for the third time in her career.
The midfielder was recognised after leading her former club Barcelona to multiple trophies last season, including the Women’s UEFA Champions League.
Putellas also played a key role in helping Spain win the Women’s Nations League.
Now with London City Lionesses, the 32-year-old ended the three-year dominance of fellow Spain international Aitana Bonmati, who had won the award in each of the previous three seasons.
Putellas previously claimed back-to-back Ballon d’Or titles in 2021 and 2022 before suffering a serious ACL injury that temporarily interrupted her career.
Her latest triumph represents a remarkable comeback and further strengthens her status as one of the greatest players in women’s football history.
A Historic Night for Football
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony celebrated two outstanding individual seasons, with Kane finally securing football’s most coveted personal award and Putellas reclaiming the women’s crown after overcoming significant adversity.
