A case has been filed over the demolition of a healthcare facility operated by Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur-1, with police naming Hanif Mia and 200 to 250 unidentified individuals as accused.
According to Shah Ali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jahangir Alam, the case includes allegations of unlawful entry, theft, issuing threats, and causing extensive property damage. The complaint was filed by Radda Executive Director Nasrin Akhter following the incident.
Radda alleged that the attack took place around midnight on Thursday at its maternal and child healthcare centre, which has provided free primary healthcare, maternity services, and family planning support to low-income families in the area for nearly five decades in partnership with the government.
The organisation claimed that its office was demolished and that equipment, medical supplies, and vaccination materials were looted during the incident. According to Radda, the facility, consisting of one permanent and three semi-permanent buildings, was torn down using heavy machinery.
In a statement, Nasrin Akhter described the incident as a “well-planned act of violence” rather than a simple act of vandalism or theft. She alleged that more than 250 individuals armed with makeshift weapons entered the premises, held security guards hostage, and carried out extensive destruction and looting.
Radda estimated that the attack caused approximately Tk 15 million in damages and resulted in the suspension of long-running healthcare services previously provided through the centre.
The organisation has condemned the incident and demanded that authorities identify and punish those responsible.
Responding to the allegations, Mirpur BNP leader Md Hanif Mia, whose name has been included in the case, denied any involvement.
“I am not involved in this incident in any way. I don’t even know what happened there. Who put my name in the case?” he said.
Police said the investigation is ongoing, and authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the demolition and the allegations made in the case.
