The 20th Asian Games will officially open in Japan on Saturday with a spectacular opening ceremony, marking the start of one of the world’s largest multi-sport events. With around 17,000 athletes and officials taking part, the Games will feature more participants than the Olympic Games and are expected to showcase the best sporting talent from across Asia.
Hosted across Nagoya and Aichi Prefecture, the continental sporting spectacle will see athletes compete for 469 gold medals in more than 40 sports before the Games conclude on October 4. The first gold medal is expected to be awarded on Sunday in the men’s individual triathlon event.
The competition also carries significant importance for athletes aiming to reach the 2028 Olympic Games, with qualification opportunities available in seven sports. Several world-class athletes are expected to compete, adding further prestige to the event.
The Games have also seen a handful of unexpected incidents, including an error during a men’s hockey match where North Korea’s national anthem was reportedly played instead of South Korea’s, prompting criticism from officials.
Meanwhile, India made a last-minute change to its opening ceremony arrangements after shot-putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor was unable to receive his ceremonial uniform in time. Kabaddi captain Pawan Sehrawat was subsequently selected as the country’s flag bearer.
Despite the setbacks, organisers remain confident the event will deliver a memorable experience. They have described the Nagoya-Aichi Games as potentially the most spectacular Asian Games in generations.
Competition is already underway in sports including basketball, football, and cricket, while traditional Olympic disciplines such as athletics and swimming will share the spotlight with regional favourites including kabaddi and sepak takraw.
As Asia’s premier multi-sport competition gets underway, attention now turns to the athletes who will compete for continental glory and Olympic qualification over the coming weeks.
