Nepal’s government is facing growing public scrutiny over its response to one of the country’s deadliest recent disasters, as rescue and relief efforts continue following catastrophic flooding that has left thousands dead or missing.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah, widely known as Balen, assumed office six months ago and now faces one of the biggest challenges of his administration. Authorities say the disaster has claimed at least 1,429 lives and left thousands more missing across affected areas of Nepal and neighboring regions.
Among those impacted is Himal Thakur, whose parents and siblings were working in the flood-hit district of Rasuwa when the disaster struck. Thakur said he sought assistance from local authorities and emergency services but struggled to obtain immediate help. Days later, he arranged transportation to search for family members himself. Several relatives remain missing, while the body of a man believed to be his brother has reportedly been found.
As recovery efforts continue, attention remains focused on how authorities respond to the ongoing humanitarian needs of affected communities and support families searching for loved ones.
