A major search and rescue operation is underway in Vanuatu after the ferry MV Matui sank in rough weather, leaving at least one person dead and more than 30 others missing.
According to a statement from the office of Prime Minister Jotham Napat, the ferry was carrying dozens of passengers and crew when it went down between the islands of Ambae and Santo. Authorities have confirmed that 15 people have been found alive, while rescue teams continue efforts to locate those still unaccounted for.
The operation began after a crew member managed to swim ashore and alert local authorities. Matai Seremaiah, a parliamentary representative for the Luganville area, said rescue teams immediately launched a search after receiving the distress report.
The incident occurred in adverse weather conditions, with reports indicating that strong winds and marine warnings were in effect at the time of the sinking. Rescue efforts initially focused on open waters but have since shifted to the south-eastern coastline, where ocean currents may have carried survivors.
Authorities are also examining whether safety procedures were followed. Officials have indicated that potential negligence, including the possibility of overloading the vessel, will form part of a formal investigation into the disaster. The inquiry is expected to determine the exact circumstances that led to the ferry’s sinking.
