Bangladesh has decided not to attend the upcoming BRICS Summit in New Delhi, a move that has prompted discussion about the country’s diplomatic engagement with major international forums.
According to State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kobir, the invitation was extended to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in his capacity as chair of BIMSTEC rather than specifically as Bangladesh’s prime minister. Based on that distinction, the government chose not to participate in the summit.
The decision has attracted attention because the BRICS grouping includes several countries that play important roles in Bangladesh’s economy, trade, development, and regional relations. Members include China, India, Russia, Brazil, South Africa, and a number of newer partner countries.
Observers have noted that international summits often provide opportunities for bilateral meetings, discussions on trade and investment, and engagement with emerging economies. The decision not to attend means Bangladesh will not be represented at this year’s gathering.
The BRICS Summit comes at a time when emerging economies are seeking a greater role in global economic and political discussions. Participation by countries outside the bloc is often viewed as an opportunity to strengthen diplomatic contacts and explore areas of cooperation.
