A childcare centre in northern Tasmania has confirmed that a child recently treated for tuberculosis (TB) had attended the facility, prompting precautionary testing for children and staff. Please confirm all public‑health information with a trusted source.
The child whose age and gender have not been disclosed for privacy reasons last attended the Kings Meadow Goodstart Early Learning Centre in mid‑July. The centre caters for children aged six months to six years.
A Goodstart spokesperson said the centre was informed of the case last week and began contacting families yesterday. Tasmania’s Department of Health and the Launceston General Hospital are coordinating testing for close contacts.
TB is rare in Australia, and while potentially deadly if untreated, it is curable with antibiotics. Globally, the disease causes an estimated 1.3 million deaths each year, according to the Australian Centre for Disease Control. The World Health Organization lists India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Pakistan and Vietnam among countries with high TB prevalence.
The centre and health authorities say the testing is precautionary, and there is no indication of wider risk to the community.
