Sydney Airport has warned travellers to brace for significant delays on Saturday, with more than 150 flights affected across both domestic and international terminals due to air traffic control staffing issues.
The disruption hit multiple airlines, with around 95 delays recorded across the Qantas network including about 25 QantasLink services earlier in the day. Virgin Australia also confirmed delays to flights operating to and from Sydney.
Stephen Beckett, CEO of Airlines for Australia and New Zealand, said thousands of passengers had been caught up in the chaos, blaming the situation on Airservices Australia’s ongoing “operational challenges.”
“We understand that they are again struggling to have enough people rostered on in the air traffic control tower to keep the air service operating efficiently,” he said. Beckett added that both international and domestic flights were being impacted, creating a ripple effect across the national network
The delays come during a busy travel period, leaving passengers frustrated as airlines work to manage the backlog caused by staffing shortages in critical air‑traffic operations.
