The 2026 FIFA World Cup is already breaking records before a single ball has been kicked. With 48 nations now confirming their final squads, an unprecedented milestone has emerged: eight players aged 40 or above are set to feature in the same World Cup the highest number in the tournament’s history.

Across the previous 22 editions of the World Cup, from 1930 to 2022, only eight players in total had ever played at age 40 or older. This year alone matches that entire tally, underscoring a new era of longevity, elite fitness and extended careers at the highest level.

Leading the group is Craig Gordon, Scotland’s 43‑year‑old goalkeeper, who will be making his World Cup debut. Scotland return to the tournament for the first time since 1998, giving Gordon the long‑awaited chance to stand on football’s biggest stage. Drawn in Group C alongside Brazil, Morocco and Haiti, he may even face the five‑time world champions in Scotland’s third match.

Five of the eight players in this age‑defying group are goalkeepers  Gordon, Guillermo Ochoa, Manuel Neuer, Josimar Diaz and Fernando Muslera a position where experience and composure often outweigh raw athleticism. Gordon and Diaz will be appearing in their first World Cup, while the others remain icons of consistency for their national teams.

The second‑oldest player on the list is none other than Cristiano Ronaldo, who at 41 will play in his sixth World Cup, equalling the all‑time record for most tournament appearances. His longevity continues to redefine expectations for elite forwards.

Other veterans such as Luka Modrić, Edin Džeko, Ochoa, Neuer and Muslera have spent more than a decade leading their national sides. Despite their age, their fitness, leadership and technical quality remain invaluable assets.

Oldest Players at the 2026 World Cup Craig Gordon (Scotland)  43,  Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) 41,  Guillermo Ochoa (Mexico) 40,  Luka Modrić (Croatia) 40, Edin Džeko (Bosnia) 40,  Manuel Neuer (Germany), 40 Josimar Diaz (Cape Verde),  40 Fernando Muslera (Uruguay)- 40

As football evolves, so too does the definition of peak performance  and this World Cup proves that age is no barrier when talent, discipline and experience align.
