VicRoads Chief Apologises After Week‑Long Tech Meltdown Leaves Motorists Unable to Access Key Services

VicRoads chief Giles Thompson has apologised to motorists after a major network‑wide upgrade triggered a week of system failures that left thousands unable to register vehicles, book driving tests or access online services.

The overhaul designed to replace what Thompson described as a “very old system from the mid‑1980s” caused widespread outages. The VicRoads website was offline for most of Friday, deliberately shut down over the weekend, and its automated phone service also went dark. Many users continued to report failed transactions well into Tuesday.

Thompson said that “all services through all channels” were now operational, but the VicRoads website still displayed a warning on Tuesday afternoon stating it was “currently experiencing intermittent system issues resulting in some failed transactions.”

He acknowledged the frustration caused by the prolonged disruption.“There have been real significant challenges for our customers over the last week,” he said, adding that the upgrade was necessary to modernise decades‑old infrastructure.

The outage has prompted renewed scrutiny of Victoria’s digital service resilience, with motorists calling for clearer communication and stronger contingency planning during major system upgrades.
