Putin-Araghchi Meet in St Petersburg as US-Iran Tensions Escalate

2 min read

Diplomatic activity has intensified amid rising tensions between the United States and Iran, with Russian state news agency TASS reporting that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg on Monday. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said President Putin considers the meeting highly significant, given how rapidly the situation in Iran and the wider Middle East is evolving.

Araghchi arrived in Russia early Monday seeking Moscow’s support after diplomatic efforts to secure a US-Iran ceasefire stalled. The deadlock deepened over the weekend when US President Donald Trump cancelled the planned Islamabad visit of his special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The cancellation has sharply reduced the prospects of Pakistan‑mediated peace talks between Washington and Tehran.

Before travelling to Moscow, Araghchi visited Oman, a long‑time mediator in regional disputes. He said discussions there focused on ensuring safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz a matter crucial not only for neighbouring states but for global trade. He also described his Islamabad trip as “productive,” noting that he presented a detailed framework aimed at permanently halting the conflict imposed on Iran.

On Saturday, Araghchi wrote on social media that the world would soon see “how sincere the United States truly is about diplomacy.” Shortly after his remarks, President Trump cancelled the planned peace‑focused Islamabad mission, further complicating the diplomatic landscape.
