Bangladesh pulled off a remarkable victory in the opening T20 of the three‑match series, defeating New Zealand by six wickets and taking a confident 1-0 lead. The win came through a record run chase, marking the Tigers’ highest successful pursuit against the Kiwis in international T20 cricket.
Chasing 183, Bangladesh made a shaky start. Openers Saif Hassan and Tanzid Hasan Tamim struggled to find rhythm, putting early pressure on the innings with slow scoring. Captain Liton Das also failed to make an impact, and by the halfway stage, frustration was visible among supporters as the top order faltered.
But the momentum shifted dramatically thanks to two crucial partnerships in the middle overs. The middle‑order batters absorbed the pressure, rebuilt the innings and then accelerated with authority, turning a tense contest into a commanding chase.
The previous highest successful chase against New Zealand for Bangladesh was 135, but this time the Tigers comfortably surpassed that mark. Their overall highest T20 chase remains the 215 they hunted down against Sri Lanka in 2018.
Despite early setbacks, Bangladesh’s composed and calculated batting in the latter half of the innings ensured they reached the target with control and confidence, sealing a memorable win and taking charge of the series.
