A senior New South Wales police sergeant has died from an apparent gunshot wound at his home on the Central Coast, prompting a formal critical incident investigation. The 56‑year‑old officer was discovered at a residence in Bateau Bay on Monday morning.

Police say there is no indication the death is suspicious, but a full forensic examination is underway. A crime scene has been established as investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

NSW Police confirmed the matter will be referred to the state coroner. “A critical incident investigation is underway, which will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and oversighted by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission,” a police spokesperson said.

The death of a serving officer is a deeply distressing event for colleagues, family and the wider community. If you or someone you know is struggling, support services are available.
