The Bangladeshi government has clarified that the newly passed law on age limits for public‑sector recruitment does not reduce anyone’s existing opportunities. Any position that previously allowed a higher maximum age such as 35, 40 or 45 years will continue to follow those earlier, higher limits. In other words, the new law standardises the general age limit but preserves all prior exceptions.
Recruitment rules for the defence services and law‑enforcement agencies will also remain governed by their own existing regulations, without any changes.
The legislation “Maximum Age Limit for Direct Recruitment in Government, Autonomous, Statutory Authorities, Public Non‑Financial Corporations and Self‑Governed Institutions Bill, 2026” was introduced in Parliament on Sunday (April 5) by State Minister for Public Administration Md Abdul Bari. The bill was later passed by voice vote during a session chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed.
Explaining the purpose of the bill, the state minister said the age‑limit increase aims to give educated unemployed youth greater opportunities to contribute to national development and to create a positive impact on the labour market. The bill also replaces two ordinances issued in 2024 and 2025, giving them a permanent legal framework.
