Aussie Track Star Kristina Clonan Reveals the Unusual Injury That Nearly Ended Her Season

2 min read

Kristina Clonan has battled through one of the most frustrating chapters of her career an injury so uncommon in cycling that it’s more often seen in cricket fast bowlers than elite sprinters. The Australian track star opened up about the ordeal at the Anna Meares Velodrome during the National Championships, explaining just how debilitating the condition became.

“I pretty much had fluid in the bone,” Clonan said, describing an injury that offered no quick fixes. “It is very frustrating because you can’t have a cortisone or steroid to help. Really, time just fixed it and being an athlete going against the clock, patience is something that I don’t really have much of.”

The injury sidelined her for nine months, wiping out her entire season and forcing her to miss the Santiago World Championships. For a rider known for explosive power and relentless drive, the forced break was a bitter blow.

But the time away also gave the 27‑year‑old something she rarely allows herself: perspective. The long recovery, though painful and mentally taxing, became a moment of reflection a reminder of the immense physical force elite sprinters push through their bodies, both on the bike and in the gym, to stay at the top of the sport.

As Clonan returns to competition, her resilience is already becoming part of her story a testament to the grit required to compete at the highest level.
