Flooding in the remote Northern Territory community of Daly River (Nauiyu) is on the verge of becoming the worst on record, with water levels now only centimetres below the historic 1998 peak.
As of Friday morning, the gauge at the Daly River Police Station recorded 16.23 metres just shy of the 16.25m reached during the devastating 1998 flood. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has warned that more moderate rainfall is expected in the coming days.
BOM forecaster James Ashley said there was “every chance” the river would reach and possibly exceed the 1998 level by “a few centimetres.” He also cautioned that the community is facing a prolonged flood event, with major flood levels likely to persist for at least a week.
Residents of Daly River were evacuated on Saturday and have been sheltering at Foskey Pavilion at the Darwin Showgrounds. This marks the second major flood to hit the community this year; the previous event peaked at 14.2 metres.
Authorities remain on high alert as the river continues to rise, with emergency services preparing for the possibility of record‑breaking inundation.
