US President Donald Trump has called on Australia to offer asylum to the visiting Iranian women’s national football team, warning they could face severe punishment if forced to return home after refusing to sing the national anthem during matches.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote:
“Australia is making a terrible humanitarian mistake by allowing the Iran National Woman’s Soccer team to be forced back to Iran, where they will most likely be killed.”
He urged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to intervene, adding:
“Don’t do it, Mr. Prime Minister, give ASYLUM. The US will take them if you won’t.”
The appeal comes amid heightened scrutiny of the team, which has faced political backlash from Iranian state media for remaining silent during the anthem at an earlier match. Their actions have sparked international concern about their safety should they return to Iran.
The Australian government has not yet publicly responded to Trump’s remarks.
