The United States announced Monday that it will designate the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a terrorist organization, accusing the Islamist group of receiving support from Iran and using violence to destabilize the country.
The designation will take effect in one week and follows similar moves in January, when Washington labelled several other branches of the Muslim Brotherhood including its historic Egyptian faction as terrorist organizations.
In a statement, the US State Department said:
“The Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood uses unrestrained violence against civilians to undermine efforts to resolve the conflict in Sudan and advance its violent Islamist ideology.”
The move comes as Sudan remains engulfed in a devastating internal conflict, with multiple armed groups vying for power and regional actors accused of fueling instability. Washington’s latest designation signals a widening US effort to pressure Islamist networks it says are backed by Tehran.
