Authorities have announced financial and employment support for the family of a man killed after a bearing pad from the Dhaka Metro Rail fell in the Farmgate area on Sunday afternoon.
Road and Rail Adviser Faozul Kabir Khan, who visited the accident site on October 26, confirmed that the victim’s family will receive an initial compensation of 500,000 taka. He also assured that if the family has a capable member, they will be offered a job within the metro rail system.
Khan emphasized that the metro rail authorities will take full responsibility for the victim’s family. He added that he would personally visit the injured at the hospital and ensure they receive proper medical treatment.
In response to the tragedy, a five-member investigation committee has been formed, led by Bridge Division Secretary Mohammad Abdur Rouf. The committee has been tasked with submitting its findings within two weeks.
The victim, identified as Abul Kalam, was a resident of Isharopati village in Naria upazila of Shariatpur. He died instantly when the heavy bearing pad detached and struck him near the Farmgate metro station around 12:30 pm.
The incident has raised serious concerns about safety standards in the country’s flagship metro rail project. Authorities temporarily suspended operations following the accident and pledged to take corrective measures once the investigation is complete.
This tragic event has not only shaken public confidence but also highlighted the urgent need for stricter monitoring of infrastructure safety in Dhaka’s rapidly expanding transport network.
