Bangladesh has recorded a significant rise in apparel exports to the United States, defying a global downward trend. According to data from the Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA), US garment imports dropped by 5.30 percent between 2015 and 2024, while imports from Bangladesh rose by 26.62 percent during the same period.

In contrast, exports from China Bangladesh’s key competitor fell by 18.36 percent. Meanwhile, Vietnam and India saw their exports grow by 32.96 percent and 34.13 percent respectively. Indonesia experienced a 19.82 percent decline, while Cambodia posted a modest increase of 10.78 percent.

Unit price trends also revealed a shifting landscape. The average unit price of US apparel imports declined by 1.71 percent globally. China and India saw sharp drops of 33.80 percent and 4.56 percent respectively. On the other hand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Cambodia recorded increases of 6.64 percent, 7.38 percent and 38.31 percent. Bangladesh’s unit price rose by 7.30 percent, aligning closely with the global average.

Former BGMEA director Mohiuddin Rubel noted that Bangladesh has room to further increase its unit price, especially when compared to Vietnam and India. He emphasized that boosting unit value could raise total export earnings without increasing shipment volumes.

Rubel also pointed out that although China and Vietnam had similar export values in 2024, Vietnam’s shipment volume was less than half of China’s, reflecting its focus on higher-value products.
